• 18 years old or older
• Have a diagnosis of chronic kidney disease
• Not have anemia due to a cause other than chronic kidney disease
• Not have uncontrolled hypertension
• Not have HIV
• Not have uncontrolled seizures
• Not receive blood transfusions within 3 months of study introduction
• Not have major surgery within 2 months of study introduction
• Not have a history of alcohol or substance abuse within the previous 5 years
• Not have used an investigational drug or participated in an investigational study within 30 days of screening
• Not be pregnant or intend to be pregnant
• Not be breast-feeding
• No severe psychiatric conditions
